KCl (equiv to K 10 mEq)
Indications/Uses
Treatment or prevention of low K levels.
Dosage/Direction for Use
K depletion 40-100 mEq in divided doses. Do not administer >20 mEq as single dose. Prevention of hypokalemia 20 mEq in single or divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water, do not crush/chew.
Special Precautions
Cardiac disease or conditions predisposing to hyperkalaemia eg, renal or adrenocortical insufficiency, acute dehydration or extensive tissue destruction as w/ severe burns.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomforts eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & bleeding of digestive tract, uneven heartbeat, muscle weakness or limp feeling, severe stomach pain, numbness or tingling in hands, feet or mouth.
Drug Interactions
Increased serum K conc w/ K-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ciclosporin & K-containing drugs eg, K salts of penicillin. Avoid K-containing salt substitutes for flavoring food. Delayed gastric emptying & increased risk of GI adverse effects w/ antimuscarinics.
