Ceftriaxone Na
Treatment of chancroid, endocarditis, gastroenteritis (invasive salmonellosis, shigellosis), gonorrhea, Lyme disease, meningitis (including prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis), septicaemia, syphilis, typhoid fever & Whipple's disease. Prophylaxis for surgical infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Intermittent IV infusion over 30 min or deep IM inj Adult 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Severe infection Up to 4 g daily. Childn 50-75 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses. Max total daily dose of 2 g. Meningitis Childn 100 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses. Loading dose: 75 mg/kg. Max total daily dose of 4 g. Gonorrhea Adult 250 mg IM single dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis Adult 1 g single dose 0.5-2 hr prior to surgery.
Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone & other cephalosporins. Hyperbilirubinemic neonates. Neonates <28 days receiving Ca-containing IV products.
Special Precautions
History of penicillin allergy; patient w/ poor oral ingestion or in parenteral nutrition; gallbladder, biliary tract, liver or pancreatic disease. Superinfection may occur w/ prolonged therapy. Severe renal disorder. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity; granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, leukopenia; elevation of GOT & AL-P, symptomatic precipitation of ceftriaxone Ca salt in gall bladder; nausea, vomiting, loose stools, diarrhea; headache.
