Indications/Uses
Resp tract, mild to moderate skin & soft tissue infections; otitis media & Helicobacter eradication.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Doses in 12 hr: Pharyngitis/tonsillitis 250 mg for 10 days. Acute maxillary sinusitis 500 mg for 14 days. Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis due to S. pneumoniae & M. catarrhalis 250 mg for 7-14 days; H. influenzae 500 mg for 7-14 days. Pneumonia due to S. pneumoniae & M. pneumoniae & uncomplicated skin & skin structure 250 mg for 7-14 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin, erythromycin or any macrolides. Cisapride, pimozide or terfenadine.
Special Precautions
Consider pseudomembranous colitis in patients who present w/ diarrhea. May permit overgrowth of colitis. May cause allergic reaction due to tartrazine content. Patients w/ severe renal impairment w/ or w/o co-existing hepatic impairment. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, abdominal pain/discomfort, headache. Adults: Nausea, abnormal taste, dyspepsia. Childn: Rash.
Drug Interactions
Increased serum theophylline conc; plasma conc of carbamazepine, ranitidine, bismuth (plasma trough conc) & active metabolite of terfenadine; steady-state plasma conc of omeprazole. Decreased steady-state of zidovudine (in HIV-infected adults). Increased mean steady-state Cmin & AUC w/ fluconazole (200 mg daily).
