Mycophenolate mofetil
Indications/Uses
Prevention of graft rejection & has also been tried in diseases w/ an autoimmune or immune-mediated inflammatory component w/ other immunosuppressants.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly Renal transplantation 1 g bid. Cardiac & hepatic transplantation 1.5 g bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not crush/open. In stable renal transplant patients, may be administered w/ meals if necessary.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to mycophenolate mofetil or mycophenolic acid.
Special Precautions
Monitor lymphomas & other malignancies particularly of the skin; infections or sepsis; lymphoproliferative disease or lymphoma; neutropenia; GI bleeding. Avoid concomitant use w/ live attenuated vaccines. Perform complete blood counts wkly during the 1st mth, twice mthly for the 2nd & 3rd mth, then mthly through the 1st yr. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn receiving allogeneic cardiac or hepatic transplantation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Infections & infestations; benign, malignant & unspecified neoplasms; blood & lymphatic, metabolism & nutrition, psychiatric, nervous system, cardiac, vascular, resp, thoracic & mediastinal, GI, hepatobiliary, skin & SC tissue, musculoskeletal & connective tissue, renal & urinary disorders; general disorders & administration site conditions.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ acyclovir. Cholestyramine & other agents that may interfere w/ enterohepatic recirculation. OCs; rifampin. Antacids containing Mg & Al hydroxides (do not administer simultaneously).
