Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initial dose: 500-1,000 mg daily in divided doses. Max: 5 tab daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Juvenile DM, diabetic coma, ketoacidosis, renal & hepatic insufficiency, cardiac & resp insufficiency, severe infection, alcohol abuse, history of lactic acidosis. Pregnancy. Elderly.
Special Precautions
Monitor renal & hepatic competence during therapy.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, diarrhea, nausea & anorexia. May impair vit B12 & folic acid absorption.
Drug Interactions
Antihyperglycemic, salicylates & pyrazolones, MAOIs, oxytetracycline, ACE inhibitors, derivatives of clofibrate, cyclophosphamide & insulin. β-blockers, clonidine, reserpine & guanethidine. Glucocorticoids, OCs, adrenaline & other sympathomimetics, glucagons, thyroid hormones & phenothiazines. Cimetidine, alcohol.
