Indications/Uses
Infections due to susceptible organisms, including biliary-tract infections, bronchitis, endocarditis, epiglottitis, gastroenteritis (including E. coli enteritis, salmonella enteritis & shigellosis), gonorrhea, listeriosis, bacterial meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pneumonia, septicemia, typhoid & parathyroid fever & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Resp tract & soft tissue infections Patient ≥40 kg 250-500 mg IM/IV 6 hrly, <40 kg 25-50 mg/kg 6-8 hrly in equally divided doses. GI & GUT infections Patient ≥40 kg 500 mg IM/IV 6 hrly, <40 kg 50 mg/kg/day 6-8 hrly in equally divided doses. Gonorrhea Adult 500 mg IM/IV 8-12 hrly in 2 doses, repeated if necessary. Adult & childn Bacterial meningitis 150-300 mg/kg 3-4 hrly in equally divided doses. Septicemia 150-200 mg/kg. Initially, administer IV for at least 3 days & continue IM 3-4 hrly.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue if skin rash occurs. Infectious mononucleosis, lymphatic leukemia, HIV infection. Pregnancy & lactation.
Drug Interactions
Decreased efficacy of estrogen-containing OCs. Possible prolonged bleeding time in administration w/ coagulants. Increased risk of skin rash w/ allopurinol. Antagonism w/ chloramphenicol.
