Felodipine
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate HTN, either alone or w/ other antihypertensive agents.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 5 mg once daily. May adjust to 1.5-10 mg once daily according to patient's response. Elderly >65 yr 2.5 mg once daily. Impaired liver function 2.5 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take w/o food or w/ a light meal. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Special Precautions
May occasionally precipitate significant hypotension, & rarely, syncope. May lead to reflex tachycardia which may result to angina pectoris.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, flushing, headache, hypotension, peripheral edema, tachycardia, palpitations; nausea & other GI disturbances, increased micturition frequency, lethargy, eye pain, visual disturbances, mental depression. Paradoxical increase in ischemic chest pain may occur at the start of treatment & excessive fall in BP has led to cerebral or myocardial ischemia or transient blindness in few patients. Rashes (including erythema multiforme), fever, liver function abnormalities, including cholestasis; gingival hyperplasia, myalgia, tremor, & impotence.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma levels w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors, cimetidine; lowered by anticonvulsants. Increases AUC & Cmax of β-blockers.
