Diacerein
Indications/Uses
Degenerative joint diseases (OA & related diseases). Relief or improvement of OA symptoms eg, pain, inflammation & joint impairment. Long-term treatment can slow down disease progression & preserve articular cartilage. Alternative medication in patients who do not respond to other OA treatments &/or patients who present contraindications to joint replacement/surgery, NSAIDs & those w/ CV problems in whom NSAIDs are contraindicated.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 cap once daily or bid for at least 3 mth. Long-term treatment is recommended for preservation of articular cartilage & to delay disease progression.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ main meals.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to anthraquinone derivatives. Patients w/ intestinal obstruction, pseudo-obstruction & severe hepatic insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Not to be taken concomitantly w/ laxatives. Reduce dose in patients w/ renal insufficiency (CrCl <30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Accelerated intestinal transit time w/ diarrhea, loose or soft stools w/in the 1st few days of therapy; urine may appear more intensely yellow in colour.
Drug Interactions
Al- &/or Mg(OH)2-containing antacids; take w/in a min time interval of 2 hr.
