Indications/Uses
Oral soln: Constipation, for regulation of physiological rhythm of colon. When a soft stool is considered of medical benefit (haemorrhoids, post colonic/anal surgery). Treatment & prevention of hepatic coma or precoma. Syr: Chronic constipation & portal systemic encephalopathy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral soln Constipation or when soft stool is considered of medical benefit Adult & adolescent Initially 15-45 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 15-30 mL daily. Childn 7-14 yr Initially 15 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 10-15 mL daily. If maintenance dose is <15 mL, Duphalac syr should be used, 1-6 yr Initial/maintenance dose: 5-10 mL daily. If maintenance dose is <15 mL, Duphalac syr should be used. Infant <1 yr Initial/maintenance dose: Up to 5 mL daily. If maintenance dose is <15 mL, Duphalac syr should be used. Hepatic encephalopathy Adult Initially 20-30 g or 30-45 mL tid-qid, may be adjusted to achieve 2-3 soft stools/day. Syr Constipation Initial dose/day (for 3 days): Adult 15-45 mL. Childn 6-14 yr 15 mL, 1-6 yr 5-10 mL. Infant <1 yr 5 mL. Maintenance dose/day: Adult 10-25 mL. Childn 5-10 mL. Infant 5 mL. Hepatic encephalopathy 30-45 mL tid-qid, adjusted according to response.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: For single daily dose, take at the same time each day (eg, during breakfast).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Galactosaemia, GI obstruction, digestive perforation or risk of digestive perforation.
Special Precautions
Painful abdominal symptoms of undetermined cause prior to treatment. Insufficient therapeutic effect after several days. Lactose intolerance. Diabetics (caution w/ higher dose use in hepatic encephalopathy treatment). Diarrhea & electrolyte balance disturbance w/ chronic use of unadjusted doses & misuse. Galactose or fructose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Expect fecal incontinence, bedsoiling, & peri-anal irritation if administered as retention enema; observe patient's hydration status. Do not administer if abdominal symptoms are present. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea. Flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Syr Drugs that have a colon pH-dependent release (eg, 5-ASA agents) may be inactivated.
