Indications/Uses

Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Trichomoniasis, amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis. Treatment & prevention of post-op anaerobic infections. Amoebic dysentery & other intestinal amoebic disease 200 mg tid for 7 consecutive days or 2 g as a single dose or 800 mg morning & 1.2 g evening for 2 days. Amoebic dysentery & other intestinal amoebic disease Adult 500-750 mg tid for 5-10 days. Childn 11.6-16.7 mg/kg tid for 10 days. Inj Treatment & prevention of infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria Adult & childn >12 yr Loading dose of 15 mg/kg infused over 1 hr, maintenance: 7.5 mg/kg infused over 1 hr 6-8 hrly.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Blood dyscrasias. Active CNS disease.
Special Precautions
1st trimester of pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, anorexia, coated tongue, dry mouth, unpleasant taste, headache, pruritus, skin rash. Rarely, vomiting, diarrhea, neurologic effects, urethral discomfort & darkening of urine. Leukopenia. Peripheral neuropathy.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, may provoke a disulfiram-like reaction. Metronidazole enhances the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.

P01AB01 - metronidazole ; Belongs to the class of nitroimidazole derivatives antiprotozoals. Used in the treatment amoebiasis and other protozoal diseases.
J01XD01 - metronidazole ; Belongs to the class of imidazole derivative antibacterials. Used in the systemic treatment of infections.
