Quetiapine fumarate
Indications/Uses
Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Schizophrenia Initially 25 mg bid, may be increased to 25-50 mg bid or tid. Target dose: 300-400 mg/day in 2 or 3 doses. Bipolar disorder Initially 50 mg bid, may be increased to 100 mg/day to a daily dose of 400 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Neutropenia, DM, CV & cerebrovascular disease, conditions predisposing to hypotension. Seizures, extrapyramidal symptoms & tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence, dizziness, dry mouth, mild asthenia, constipation, tachycardia, orthostatic hypotension, dyspepsia, wt gain, syncope, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, leucopenia, neutropenia, peripheral oedema, blurred vision, rhinitis, elevated serum transaminases, triglyceride, cholesterol & blood glucose.
Drug Interactions
Carbamazepine, phenytoin & other hepatic enzyme inducers (eg, barbiturate, rifampicin), CYP3A4 inhibitors (azole antifungal, macrolides), centrally acting drugs, alcohol, thioridazine.
