Clindamycin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of serious anaerobic infections, notably due to Bacteroides fragilis & in some staphylococcal & streptococcal infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Serious infection 150 mg 6 hrly. More severe infection 300 mg 8 hrly. Childn Serious infection 15 mg/kg body wt/day. Severe infection 20 mg/kg body wt in 3-4 divided doses. Minimum recommended dose: 300 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. Meningitis.
Special Precautions
Pseudomembranous colitis. Patients w/ associated severe illness, history of GI disease particularly colitis. Atopic patients. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms particularly yeasts. Renal & severe liver disease.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, pseudomembranous colitis, esophagitis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; generalized mild to moderate morbilliform-like (maculopapular) skin rashes; pruritus, vaginitis; jaundice, hepatic damage, liver function tests abnormalities; transient neutropenia (leukopenia), eosinophilia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia.
Drug Interactions
May enhance actions of neuromuscular blockers. Antagonism w/ erythromycin.
