Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
To improve glycemic control in patients w/ type 2 DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Start w/ 500 mg once a day, increase dosage gradually at increments of 500 mg/day every 2 wk. Max: 2,500 mg/day in 3 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Renal impairment, liver & chronic hypoxic lung diseases, heart failure requiring pharmacologic treatment, history of lactic acidosis.
Special Precautions
Discontinue in patients undergoing radiologic studies involving intravascular administration of iodinated contrast media. Debilitated & malnourished. Pregnancy. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, metallic taste, vomiting, flatulence, asthenia, indigestion, anorexia & headache.
Drug Interactions
May reduce vit B12 & folate absorption. May reverse the effect on vit B12 absorption by calcium. Potentiated effect w/ alcohol.
