Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including bone & joint infections, bronchitis, gonorrhea, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin & soft tissue infections, & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Adult Resp tract infections 250-500 mg bid. Uncomplicated UTI 250 mg daily. Oral susp Childn >2 yr Otitis media 250 mg bid or 15 mg/kg bid; >3 mth 125 mg bid or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 250 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. History of allergy. False +ve result in Coombs' test. False -ve result in ferricyanide test. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, serum sickness-like reactions, anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
Lower bioavailability w/ drugs that reduces gastric acidity. Lower estrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs. Reduced clearance w/ probenecid.
